by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The SIU Leadership Conference is a student-led event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offering students an opportunity to expand their leadership skills, learn, interact with others and much more.

The program, from the Student Involvement and Leadership Development unit of Student Life and Intercultural Relations, is set for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 on the SIUC campus. The conference executive board is now seeking proposals from students, faculty, staff and community members who are interested in presenting interactive and informative programs for students participating in the conference. The presentations will take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The theme is “Rethinking Leadership” and possible presentation topics include diversity, leadership skills, financial advice, social justice, teamwork, healthy lifestyles, environmentally friendly lifestyle or anything else that could benefit student leaders. Presenters can be individuals or small groups, and workshops can be lectures, group activities, interactive discussions and more. The goal is providing an enriching leadership training and development experience for SIUC students.

The deadline to submit a workshop proposal is Monday, Aug. 1. You can submit proposals to Student Involvement and Leadership Development, located on the third floor of the Student Center, or by emailing them to Caitlin Moliske, SIU Leadership Conference student executive director, at cmoliske@siu.edu.

Include in the proposal: the name of the presentation, brief description, workshop format, if interested in being the keynote speaker, audio/visual equipment needed and if you can provide your own equipment, the maximum number of participants who can attend the workshop, the target audience (all students, registered student organization officers, emerging student leaders, fraternity and sorority life, registered student advisers or other groups with specifics). Also, provide the names, title/position, email, telephone number, and department/organization for each presenter. Then, note which sessions you will be available for with sessions set on the hour beginning at 10 a.m. with the final session starting at 2 p.m.
