Curriculum and Instruction awards scholarships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students acquired more than $35,000 in scholarships to facilitate their educations at the recent 2011 Honors Day for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Services.

Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown, along with the name and amount of the scholarship and the major and year of the student for the spring 2011 semester. Where available, the listing includes parent/family information and high school.

Anna

• Natalie Ligon, Elementary Education Student Organization Scholarship, $1,000. Ligon, a senior elementary education major, is the daughter of John P. and Cheryl Ligon of Anna and a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Breese

• Lynn Johnson, Margaret Walter Moss and Mary J. Moss Memorial Scholarship, $499. Johnson is a senior elementary education major and a graduate of Mater Dei High School.

Carbondale

• Lam Vien Cao, Cummings Scholarship Fund, $1,000. Cao, a doctoral instructional technology student, is the wife of William Mejia of Carbondale and her daughter is Vivien Mejia.

• Marcelene Cunningham, Cummings Scholarship Fund, $1,000. Cunningham, a doctoral student in instructional technology, is the daughter of Rupert and Carlene Cunningham of Jamaica and a graduate of Frome Technical High.

• Jamie Pfister, Curriculum and Instruction Highest Honors in Secondary Education in Math, $500. Pfister, a senior mathematics education major, is the daughter of Steve and Linda Pfister of Roanoke. She is a graduate of Roanoke-Benson High School.

• Román Eduardo Sarmiento Porras, Cummings Scholarship Fund, $1,000. Porras, a doctoral student in instructional technology, is the husband of Sara M. Castillo Castro of Carbondale.

• Brandi Schumacher, J. Murray and Myrtle F. Lee Scholarship, $600. Schumacher, a doctoral student in curriculum studies, is the daughter of Deborah Oliver and the late John Oliver of Cape Girardeau, Mo. She is a graduate of Central High School.

Carmi

• Vicki Aud, Bernice Newton Gore Memorial Scholarship, $1,500. Aud, a senior elementary education major, is married to John Aud of Carmi and her children are Ashley Jordan, Talsa Cozart, Ethan Aud, Austin Puckett and Logan Weller. She is a graduate of Carmi Community High School and Southeastern Illinois College.

Carterville

• Kelli Vancil, Elementary Education Student Organization Scholarship, $500. Vancil, a senior elementary education major, is the wife of Justin Vancil of Carterville and the daughter-in-law of Michael and Joyce Vancil of Carbondale. She is a graduate of Burns High School in North Carolina.

De Soto

• Emily Moore, Dr. Cleveland and Mrs. Yvonne Hammonds Scholarship, $500. Moore, a junior communications disorders and sciences major, is the daughter of Julie Moore of De Soto and Tim Moore of Coraopolis, Pa. She is a graduate of Carbondale Community High School.

Du Quoin

• Arika Dawn Pavloff, Fred and Eunice Banes College of Education Scholarship, $900. Pavloff, a senior elementary education major, is the daughter of Greg and Angie Pavloff of Du Quoin. She is a graduate of Christian Fellowship School in Du Quoin.

East St. Louis

• Pamela Gaston, Fred and Eunice Banes College of Education Scholarship for $900 and Dr. Cleveland and Mrs. Yvonne Hammonds Scholarship for $600. Gaston is a senior early childhood education (preschool/primary) major and a graduate of East St. Louis Senior High School.

Enfield

• Stephanie Lynn Carter, Marion and Madelyn Scott Treece Elementary Education Scholarship covering two semesters of tuition and fees. Carter, a junior elementary education major, is the daughter of Donna Carter of Enfield and David Hausmann of New Lenox and a graduate of Norris City-Omaha-Enfield High School.

Harrisburg

• Stacy N. Knight, Dr. Cleveland and Mrs. Yvonne Hammonds Scholarship, $500. Knight, a senior elementary education major, is the wife of Joshua Knight and daughter of Rodney and Sherry Horton, all of Harrisburg. She is a graduate of Harrisburg High School.

Makanda

• Junita Davis, Fred and Eunice Banes College of Education Scholarship, $900. Davis, a senior majoring in special education/elementary education, is married to Kerry Davis of Makanda. Roy and Alice Sims of Buncombe are the parents of Davis, a graduate of Vienna High School.

Marion

• Ashley Buffington, Bernice Newton Gore Memorial Scholarship, $500. Buffington, a junior elementary education major, is the daughter of Cheryl and Tom Buffington of Marion and a graduate of Marion High School.

Mt. Vernon

• Chelsea N. Donoho, Curriculum and Instruction Highest Honors in Secondary Education in Humanities, $500. Donoho, a senior secondary English education major, is the daughter of Richard and Lisa Donoho of Mt. Vernon and a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School.

• Chelsie George, Fred and Eunice Banes College of Education Scholarship, $900. George, a junior elementary education major, is the daughter of Ron and Lisa George of Mt. Vernon and a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School.

New Athens

• Jamie Williams, Marion and Madelyn Scott Treece Elementary Education Scholarship covering two semesters of tuition and fees. Jerry and Dawn Williams of New Athens are the parents of Jamie Williams, a senior elementary education major and graduate of New Athens High School.

Pinckneyville

• Christin Harris, Bill G. and Marjorie Allen Endowed Scholarship for $350 and Dormalee Harrington Lindberg ACEI Scholarship for $750. Harris, a senior with a dual major in special education and elementary education, is the daughter of the Rev. J. Mark and Michelle Harris of Pinckneyville. She is a graduate of Clewiston High School in Clewiston, Fla.

Red Bud

• Kaitlyn Stellhorn, Bernice Newton Gore Memorial Scholarship, $500. Stellhorn, a junior elementary education major, is the daughter of Martin and Terri Stellhorn of Red Bud. She is a graduate of Red Bud High School.

Winthrop Harbor

• Kallyna M. Best, Curriculum and Instruction Highest Honors in Elementary Education, $500. Best, a senior in elementary education is the daughter of Mike and Leticia Best of Winthrop Harbor and a graduate of Zion Benton Township High School.
