Flags lowered to honor war casualty

Under a proclamation signed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, the United States flag and the Illinois flag are to be at half-staff at all State of Illinois facilities in honor of a former Southern Illinois University Carbondale student killed earlier this month in Iraq.
Flags are to be flown at half-staff from immediately until sunset, Thursday, June 16, in honor of U.S. Army Pfc. Michael Curtis Olivieri of Homer Glen.
Reports said Olivieri, 26, was one of five soldiers killed June 6 when insurgents attacked their base in Baghdad. He was a field artillery data systems operator and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan., according to reports.
Olivieri graduated from Lockport Township High School in 2002. A management major, Olivieri attended SIUC from fall 2002 until spring 2005, and again in the spring and fall 2007.
