Biological sciences students win scholarships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Several biological sciences students attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale have won scholarships to further their educations.

Clay William Walker of Mount Carmel has won the Joan F. Knowles Memorial Scholarship Award and the Robert W. Davis Memorial Scholarship for fall 2011.

Walker, a pre-medical major, is the son of Gregory and Melody Walker and the grandson of Norman and Sue Schmidt and Evelyn and the late Virgil Walker, all of Mount Carmel. He is a 2009 graduate of Mount Carmel High School and a 2011 graduate of Wabash Valley College.

Walker’s previous honors and activities include serving as president of peer counselors and as vice president of student senate at Wabash Valley College. He also was president and founder of the Health Professionals Club and winner of the college’s CEO Academic Award during each of his semesters there. He was president of Phi Theta Kappa and was a member of the International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Medicine.

Brittany L. Scanlon of Brighton has won the Joan F. Knowles Memorial Scholarship Award for fall 2011 and the Ronald Glenn Thurman, Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship for both the fall and spring, 2011-12.

Scanlon, a pre-dentistry major, is the daughter of Rita C. Scanlon of Brighton and John A. Scanlon of Godfrey. She is 2008 graduate of Southwestern High School in Piasa.

Scanlon’s previous honors and activities include winning the James LaFrankie Scholarship and memberships in the Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Lauren M. Gardner of Charleston has won the Biological Sciences Alumni Award for fall 2011 and the Harvey I. Fisher Award Scholarship for both the fall and spring, 2011-12.

Gardner, a biological sciences major, is the daughter of Alan and Tammy Gardner of Charleston. She is 2009 graduate of Charleston High School.

Gardner’s previous honors and activities include winning the Scholastic Honors Award, making the dean’s list, and winning the Leo Kaplan Memorial Scholarship.

Nicole Wachter of Carterville has won Biological Sciences Alumni Award for fall 2011 and the Mark A. Montaba Memorial Scholarship for both the fall and spring, 2011-12.

Wachter, a biological sciences major, is the daughter of James and Kendall Wachter of Carterville. She is a graduate of Carterville High School.

Travis L. Healey of Brighton has won the John W. Voigt Award Scholarship for fall 2011 and the Mark A. Montaba Memorial Scholarship for both the fall and spring, 2011-12.

Healey, a pre-medicine major, is the son of Terry and Kelly Healey of Brighton. He is 2008 graduate of Southwestern High School in Piasa.

Healey’s previous honors and activities include membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Lambda, Alpha Lambda Delta and the Golden Key International Honor Society. He ranked in the top 7 percent of his class and won various other scholastic honors.

Elizabeth Hazlehurst of Forsyth has won the John W. Voigt Award Scholarship and the Dean’s Scholarship -- College of Science for fall 2011.

Hazlehurst, a pre-physician assistant major, is the daughter of Barbara and Edward Hazlehurst Jr. of Forsyth. She is a 2008 graduate of Maroa-Forsyth High School.

Hazlehurst’s previous honors and activities include winning the SIUC Women’s Club’s Dorothy Morris Award.

Steven Ebers of Cutler has won the Ronald Glenn Thurman, Ph. D. Memorial Scholarship and the Harvey I. Fisher Award Scholarship for fall 2011.

Ebers, a biological sciences major, is the son of Deborah Davis of Cutler. He is a 2009 graduate of Trico High School.
