Students invited to participate in art competition

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Calling all Southern Illinois University Carbondale artisans.

Here’s your chance to have your work of art become a part of the Student Center’s permanent art collection, on display for everyone to enjoy. The Student Programming Council Visual Arts Committee and the Student Center are sponsoring the 33rd Annual Purchase Awards and the winning piece will join the center’s art collection as the winner claims a cash award.

Any SIUC student can submit up to two entries on April 26 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Ballroom B on the second floor of the Student Center. Paintings, ceramics and all manner of media are acceptable, but the show is only open to SIUC students. Contestants must submit their own, original work.

Judging by a faculty committee will be that afternoon and selected submissions for the 2011 Purchase Awards will go on display in Art Alley from April 26 until May 11. Students can pick up works not selected between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on April 26. Although the judging happens that day, the announcement of the grand prizewinner won’t happen until a few days later.

A reception is set for 5 p.m. on April 29 in Art Alley on the second floor of the Student Center. Then at 5:30 p.m. will come the announcement of the 33rd Annual Purchase Awards grand prize-winner. Runners-up will get certificates.
