Student Center designers win regional awards

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Student Center Graphics Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale won a number of awards at the recent Association of College Unions International Regions 8 and 9 Conference at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind.

Although each school could only submit entries for eight of the 10 categories, SIUC designers captured seven awards in five categories for the Region 9 judging. Region 9 includes all of the colleges and universities in Illinois and Indiana with the exception of the metropolitan Chicago area that comprises Region 8.

The winning SIUC professional staff designers, listed by competition category, along with their winning promotions, are:

1st -- Nathan Bonner, 2010-2011 Dawg Book.

2nd -- Nathan Bonner, 50th anniversary cup.

Promotional Campaign

1st -- Sebastian Jaramillo, Bowling 4 Boobs.

2nd -- Nathan Bonner, Autumn Harvest Brunch.

1st -- Sebastian Jaramillo, Sunset Concerts.

Also, Jonathan Clark, an undergraduate assistant and senior art major from Carbondale, took first place in the Student Staff category for his work with the 2010 Spring Drag Show.

In addition, Brandi Harris was one of the winners of the Mary Robinson Diversity Scholarship, one of several scholarships presented at the conference. Harris is a senior finance major from Belleville.

ACUI is an international organization bringing members together for educational, advocacy and networking purposes. The regional conference brought together hundreds of university professionals and students, sharing, learning and networking. The theme of the 2010 conference was “Counting on the College Union Idea.”

Staff members from SIUC also made presentations during the conference. Don Castle led an interactive discussion about “Program Boards in the 21st Century.” Matt Kreimeier and Brandi Harris presented “The World of Marketing Roundtable Discussion.” Kreimeier is a graduate assistant from Hazen, Ark., pursuing his master’s in higher education.
