Wind ensemble, concert choir to perform Oct. 21

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Non-stop music is on the menu for an Oct. 21 concert by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $6 for students.

The SIUC Concert Choir and the SIUC Wind Ensemble are top touring student ensembles, with a Carnegie Hall debut and an international tour among their recent credits.

Christopher Morehouse, assistant professor and director of bands, explained that the two musical groups will perform a continuous flow of music.

“Ensembles will be placed throughout the auditorium,” he said. “”There is no applause and no interruptions between selections.”

Though the choir and the wind ensemble do not perform simultaneously during this concert, the musical selections demonstrate different perspectives of American composers, including Charles Ives, Eric Whitacre, John Corigliano. Among the wind ensemble’s selections are John Adams’ “Lollapalooza,” and Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer.”

The choir and the wind ensemble will go on the road in Illinois next spring, with performances scheduled at the Hoogland Center for the Arts in Springfield and the Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

Susan Davenport, assistant professor, is director of choral activities. The SIUC Concert Choir performs under her leadership.
