SIUC teams with Yoplait to fight breast cancer

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale is helping raise funds to fight breast cancer.

You’ll find collection boxes in several locations where you can drop off pink Yoplait yogurt lids in conjunction with Yoplait’s “Save Lids to Save Lives” annual campaign. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this campaign raises funds to combat the disease.

Collection boxes are at the Student Recreation Center, the Student Health Center, the Student Center, Thompson Point Fitness Center and other locations around campus. Organizers will accept donations of clean pink lids at any of those locations through the end of November. All lids will go to Yoplait.

For every lid submitted, General Mills Inc., Yoplait’s parent company, will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The company guarantees a $500,000 contribution and SIUC is helping with the collection in hopes of securing the maximum $1.6 million donation to the foundation, created to help win the fight against breast cancer.

This is the sixth year the Student Recreation Center has led the yogurt lid collection on campus in memory of Kathleen Ann Guilfoyle, a longtime assistant director of Recreational Sports and Services who died of the disease in 2003, and also in memory and honor of people everywhere touched by the cancer.

You may also mail your lids to the SIUC Student Recreation Center, attention fitness department, Mailcode 6717, Carbondale, IL 62901. For more information, contact Lynne Thompson-Cundiff at 618/453-1275 or by e-mail at tlc2@siu.edu.
