Ballroom dance classes start Oct. 13

by Nicole Trainor

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Do you ever go to parties, weddings, or dinner dances and wish you could get up and dance? Are you looking for new and exciting ways to exercise or socialize?

The Division of Continuing Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is once again offering ballroom dancing courses during the fall 2010 semester for individuals who wish to learn a variety of basic steps found in the six most common ballroom dances.

Beginning Ballroom Dancing offers beginners and veteran dancers alike a quick introduction to the basic steps of the waltz, tango, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha and swing. There will be instruction in lead-follow and good dance technique.

For those who have learned the basics, Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing will expand on the beginning course instruction and teach more advanced techniques used in ballroom dance.

The first of the two six-week sessions of Beginning Ballroom Dancing and Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing is drawing to a close. But Session II will begin on Oct. 13, and there is still time to sign up. This session will focus on the rumba, cha cha, and swing.

The Beyond Beginner course will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by Beginning Ballroom Dancing from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Both class sessions will meet at the Carbondale Civic Center in Room 116. Courses are open to couples and singles. Registration is $30 per participant.

Dance instructors Jeremiah Linson and Crystal Hodges come to SIUC this fall from Paducah, Ky., putting their spin on DCE’s popular ballroom dancing classes. Come and learn from the pros!
