Students can compete in Ultimate Saluki Challenge

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- This is your chance to prove once and for all that you are THE Ultimate Saluki. Akin to competitors on the popular television show, contestants in this Southern Illinois University Carbondale event will test their intellect, their physical prowess and perhaps even their intestinal fortitude.

The 2010 Ultimate Saluki Challenge is open to all full-time students. The dates for the contest have changed and it is now set for Halloween weekend, Oct. 29-31. All entries for the fourth annual competition are due at the Student Recreation Center administrative office reception desk on the second floor by 7 p.m. on Oct. 6.

The Ultimate Saluki Challenge kicks off at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 and between then and 10 p.m. on Oct. 31, contestants will live, eat, play and compete at various locations around campus, including campus beach, campus boat dock and the Student Recreation Center as well as at the Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Contestants will be selected from those submitting completed application packets.

The 2010 challenges will be more challenging and more fun than ever before, according to Sally Wright, assistant director of Recreational Sports and Services.

Contestants will vie for great prizes -- some they’ll win along the way -- while there’s a grand prize for The Ultimate Saluki. Prizes include an Apple iPad donated by The Pointe. Old National Bank is also an event sponsor.

Additional sponsors are welcome. Just contact Sally Wright at 618/453-2511 or by email at wright1@siu.edu to be part of this popular event.

Mike Skupin from the CBS reality series “Survivor: Australia” will be the guest host for Ultimate Saluki Challenge 2010.
