Media Advisory -- Day of Service

Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Development and Saluki Volunteer Corps will host the 16th annual Day of Service Saturday, Sept. 11. Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover student volunteerism activities.

Hundreds of student volunteers will make birdhouses, paint a local youth club, plant flowers and assist with other landscaping work, help with cleanup efforts and create T-shirts for orphans. The best time to capture students in action is between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:

• The Boys and Girls Club, 250 N. Springer St., Carbondale. They’ll be painting and assisting with 9/11 remembrance activities.

• The Birdhouse Factory in the Craft Shop at the Student Center. Volunteers will build and paint birdhouses to donate to local environmental groups.

• The Mississippi Room at the Student Center, where students will create T-shirts for orphaned children in Kabwe, Zambia.

Weather permitting, student volunteers will also be planting flowers around the historic downtown square area with Carbondale Main Street and sprucing up locations around the city with Keep Carbondale Beautiful.
