McIntyre named COEHS interim associate dean

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- D. John McIntyre, professor of curriculum and instruction at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has been named interim associate dean for academic and student affairs in the College of Education and Human Services, effective Aug. 19. He replaces W. Bradley Colwell, who resigned in July to head the College of Education and Human Development at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Dean Kenneth Teitelbaum said the college will search for a permanent associate dean during fall semester, hoping to have that person in place by Jan. 1.

“I’m most appreciative of John’s willingness to take on this role for a limited amount of time,” Teitelbaum said. “He has the administrative experience and skills, knowledge of the college and the University, and strong sense of collegiality that will be of great help to us during this ‘transitional’ time.”

McIntyre has previously served as associate dean for teacher education and teacher partnerships and as acting associate dean for academic affairs. Other administrative experience includes stints as director of the college’s teaching skills laboratory and of its professional educational experiences.

He also served as president of both state and national associations of teacher educators and on the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education’s Board of Examiners.

McIntyre earned his bachelor’s degree in 1971 from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, his master’s degree in 1974 from The Ohio State University and his doctorate in 1977 from Syracuse University.
