by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A grand opening for the Thompson Point Fitness Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale -- renamed, remodeled and featuring updated equipment – is set for Wednesday, Sept. 1.

The facility is in the lower level of Lentz Hall at University Housing’s Thompson Point. The grand opening will be from 4 to 5 p.m.

Located where the Rec Center West previously was, the new Thompson Point Fitness Center is a collaborative effort between University Housing and Recreational Sports and Services to bring a quality fitness facility to Thompson Point residents.

The new center includes six machines providing various cardiovascular workout options. Each has an attached television screen connected to University Housing’s cable television system so Thompson Point residents can watch TV while working out.

In addition, the fitness center features a wide variety of strength conditioning apparatus. This includes a seated leg press, seated leg curl, leg extension, chest press, seated row, lateral pull-down, biceps curl, triceps extension, shoulder press and dual adjustable pulley. Exercisers can watch a large flat-screen wall-mounted TV while using this equipment.
