Free SIUC ‘app’ now available for mobile devices

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- OK, we’ll just say it now and get it over with -- we have an app for that. That’s right, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has its own application for mobile devices.

The application, or “app,” as the features are commonly known, is available on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and other web-enabled mobile devices. A Blackberry app is on the way. And it’s free.

So what can mobile users do with the SIUCMobile application? Well, imagine you are on campus early in the semester and you suddenly realize you don’t know where the heck you are or how to get to that appointment with your professor before class. From your mobile device, using the SIUCMobile app, you can access a campus map (in the future, it may even be coordinated with GPS!) to figure out where you are, then you can use the SIUC directory to find your professor’s email and phone so you can call or email and explain that you might be a little bit late.

On your way to the appointment, you can get the latest campus news by accessing Saluki Times, check the latest scores or upcoming athletic events on SIUC Athletics, find out what events are coming to campus on the SIUC events, or even watch SIUC videos or scroll through campus photos. More uses, including bus routes and a virtual tour, are also coming soon.

You can preview the application at www.siuc.edu/siucmobile or download it for free at iTunes.

You know what else is cool? SIUC is using quick-read bar codes, like the one with this article. Take a picture of it with your smart-phone and you automatically download all the information on the SIUCMobile page.
