Fetro to serve as interim chair of kinesiology

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Joyce V. Fetro, chair of the Department of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will administer the Department of Kinesiology while the College of Education and Human Services searches for a replacement for former chair Elaine Blinde, who retired over the summer.

Dean Kenneth Teitelbaum said both faculties agreed to the appointment, with the kinesiology faculty endorsing it through a formal vote.

“I’m very grateful to Joyce for taking on the added responsibilities during the 2010-2011 academic year and know that her intelligent and insightful leadership and her positive energy will serve both kinesiology and health education/recreation very well during this transitional time,” he said.

Fetro, a full professor, has headed her own department since 2009. She came to SIUC in 1997 from San Francisco, where she supervised school health programs and also worked as a health education curriculum specialist.

In October, she will receive the American School Health Association’s William A. Howe award -- its highest honor -- recognizing nearly four decades of outstanding professional contributions and service in furthering health education.

Fetro earned her bachelor’s in 1971 from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in 1985 and 1987 respectively from SIUC. She lives in Carbondale.
