NPR president added to GMRC speaker series

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Global Media Research Center is announcing a revised fall 2010 speaker series.

Vivian Schiller, president of National Public Radio, will participate in an open discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

In addition, the programs feature presentations from six faculty members within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, including Dafna Lemish, professor and chair of the Department of Radio-Television, and Walter C. Metz, associate professor and chair of the Department of Cinema and Photography. An eighth speaker is Joseph Oduro-Frimpong, a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology who has been doing research on Ghanaian videos and movies.

Established in 2004, the Global Media Research Center’s mission includes assembling a core group of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students to research global media issues, establish national and international partnerships to promote research, and play host to visiting scholars and artists as it seeks to develop new courses addressing global media issues.

All of the events are free and open to the public.

The Global Media Research Center is within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

The speakers are:

  • Thursday, Sept. 9 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Dafna Lemish, professor and chair, Department of Radio-Television. “What’s TV Good For? The Views of Producers of Children’s Television Around the World.”
  • Wednesday, Sept. 22 -- 2:30 p.m., location to be determined. Open discussion with Vivian Schiller, president, National Public Radio.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 28 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Joseph Oduro-Frimpong, doctoral student, SIUC Department of Anthropology. “All Shall Pass: Reflections on Doing Fieldwork in Ghana.”
  • Thursday, Oct. 7 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Walter C. Metz, associate professor and chair, Department of Cinema and Photography. “The Engineers of the Soul: Berlin, Friedrich Kittler, and The Lives of Others.”
  • Wednesday, Oct. 13 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Kavita Karan, associate professor, School of Journalism. “Political Communication in India: Interlinking Traditional, Internet, and Mobile Technologies in Election Campaigns.”
  • Wednesday, Oct. 20 – 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Jyotsna Kapur, associate professor, Department of Cinema and Photography. “Brand India’s Biggest Sale: The Cultural Politics and Political Economy of India’s ‘Global Generation’.”
  • Wednesday, Oct. 27 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Uche Onyebadi, assistant professor, School of Journalism. “Kenya’s Past Presidential Election Violence (2007); Assessing the Role of the Nation and Standard Newspapers.”
  • Tuesday, Nov. 16 -- 3 p.m., Communications Building, room 1032. Wenjing Xie, assistant professor, School of Journalism. “The Many Faces of Chinese Media.”
