Flags lowered to honor firefighter

Under a proclamation signed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, the United States flag and the Illinois flag are to be at half-staff at all State of Illinois facilities in honor of a Scales Mound firefighter killed in an all-terrain vehicle rollover on Saturday.

Flags are to be flown at half-staff immediately until sunset, Thursday, May 27, in honor of Kurt M. Meusel.

Meusel, 25, was a volunteer firefighter with the Scales Mound Fire Protection District. He was part of a search crew in rural Jo Daviess County when the ATV he was riding hit a deer in the road, according to reports. The ATV veered into a ditch and rolled. The accident happened at 9:14 p.m.
