Deadline to register for Hovercraft Camp nears

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill -- Time is running out to register for this year’s Hovercraft Camp at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The camp, which starts next month, is for high school students and gives them the opportunity to learn how to design and operate hovercraft. The College of Engineering and its Department of Technology at SIUC run the 10-day camps, in cooperation with the University’s Division of Continuing Education.

Friday, May 14, is the last day to sign up for either of the camp’s two sessions. The cost is $400. For registration or more information, contact the Division of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751 or visit www.dce.siu.edu.

The camp’s first session is set for June 7-18 and the second session is June 21-July 2. Camps run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Engineering Building D.

During the camp, students will work in small teams building hovercraft that are capable of carrying a pilot over both water and land. Students will learn teamwork, how to read a technical document, safety, and engineering, and will receive a certificate stating their ability to operate and maintain a light hovercraft.
