Students honored for academics, service

by Kathy Dillard

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The SIU Alumni Association and Student Alumni Council presented Distinguished Senior Awards to 25 outstanding Southern Illinois University Carbondale students at the annual spring “Super Student Honors Dinner” on April 10 at the Student Center.

The Distinguished Senior Award is presented to 25 standout SIUC students. In order to qualify for the honor, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be a graduating senior who has contributed to the University and Carbondale communities, answered two essay questions, and provided letters of recommendation.

The Office of the Chancellor, the SIU Alumni Association, and Student Alumni Council hosted the awards banquet.

“These students are very deserving of the honor,” Chancellor Samuel Goldman said. “They have distinguished themselves academically throughout their undergraduate careers at SIUC. But their dedication extends beyond the classroom. These young men and women have taken it upon themselves to make our campus and our communities better places to learn and live. They have helped with blood drives and meals on wheels and in worthwhile fundraising endeavors; they have mentored young children, donated time to the Humane Society, cleaned up our communities, and helped in so many other ways. These students are making the world a better place, and we appreciate their commitment and their many contributions.”

“Choosing the recipients is not easy,” said Tuesday Ashner, SIU Alumni Association director of student relations. “The application pool is amazing and each year reminds me of the talented students Southern has. They represent the University at conferences throughout the U.S., perform research, enter and win nationwide contests, perform volunteer service, maintain outstanding grades and in general make SIUC the best place to be.”

In addition to recognizing the 25 distinguished seniors, two SIUC juniors were recognized as “Super Students.”

Student recipients received recognition plaques, Saluki “puppy” statues, SIUC license plate frames, alumni T-shirt, and a first-year membership in the association.

The recipients, their hometowns, their majors and accomplishments follow:
