COEHS’ graduate programs move up in rankings

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Graduate programs in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Education and Human Services received national recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s current guide to the country’s best graduate schools posted online April 15 atwww.usnews.com.

The guide placed SIUC’s Graduate School of Education 71st out of a field of 278, based on a weighted average of quality measures that include peer and superintendent assessments, student selectivity and acceptance rates, Graduate Record Examination scores, student-faculty ratios, research expenditures and activities, and faculty honors.

The graduate program in the college’s Department of Workforce Education and Development ranked No. 8 among the country’s top specialty programs in education. These ratings come from nominations by education school deans and deans of graduate studies, who may name as many as 10 programs in each of 10 categories. The guide lists those with the most votes.

Dean Kenneth Teitelbaum said he was particularly pleased to see that his college had risen in the national ratings, moving past such schools as the University of Kentucky, Emory University and Virginia Tech.

“Our last ranking, just a couple of years ago, was No. 100, so we’ve had an amazing increase in a very short amount of time,” he said.

Noting that his college also outshone those at Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University, he added, “The only Illinois universities, private or public, with education schools ranked higher are Northwestern, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois at Chicago.”

SIUC’s workforce education department, among the largest of its kind in the country, again ranked with counterparts in such schools as The Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University and UIUC in vocational and technical education.

“This is the third time in four years that we have made the U.S. News & World Report list, and this is the highest ranking we have ever received -- just after the University of Illinois,” said Chair Beth Winfrey Freeburg.

“These are fabulous credentials and recognition for our programs. It has taken all of us to make this happen.”

The latest U.S. News &World Report rankings continue a tradition for the college. In 2007, its rehabilitation counseling program was ranked No. 6, while in 2008, its speech-language pathology program came in at No. 72, and its social work program ranked No. 82.
