Harvey Welch Jr. Golf Scramble is June 18

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 13th Annual Harvey Welch Jr. Golf Scramble, an event raising money for scholarships for Southern Illinois University Carbondale students, is set for June 18 at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale.

There’s a continental breakfast served 8-9 a.m. and then the four-person team scramble kicks off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will follow.

"This event generates funding to provide scholarships for students and to enhance other student programs and services. Student Affairs is proud to host this golf scramble. Those attending have a lot of fun and the money raised supports students and student programs so it's a winning combination," said Larry H. Dietz, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Everyone can be a part of the event, Dietz said. Teams and individuals are welcome to register and play in the scramble while those who aren't golfers can come to Hickory Ridge and do their part helping students by participating in the silent auction.

Welch devoted many years of service to SIUC, serving in a variety of roles. He was vice chancellor for student affairs during the last half of his 24-year career at the University. Although he retired in 1999, Welch’s commitment to SIUC students continues through a scholarship endowed in his name.

Funds raised by the golf scramble go to support the Harvey and Trish Welch Scholarship Fund and also toward programming and facilities support for the enhancement of student services provided by the 13 Student Affairs departments
