CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Talks by student and industry leaders, tips on landscape and lawn care, a nutrition game, ag “mythbusters,” livestock judging contests, exhibits and the traditional free beef and pork barbecue provide plenty to do at the College of Agricultural Sciences‘ annual Agriculture Industry Day Friday, April 16, at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Farms, 599 Rowden Road in Carbondale.

The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the judging contests; the exhibits and refreshment stand open at 9 a.m., with demonstrations ongoing throughout the morning.

The formal program begins at 11 a.m. with a brief welcome from Interim Dean Todd A. Winters. Jessica O. Smith, a Chicago senior in human nutrition and dietetics will then talk about her experience as an SIUC student, followed by alumnus Richard Guebert Jr., Illinois Farm Bureau vice president, telling the audience what made the University the right choice for him. The program concludes with a presentation by Chelsea Doss, a junior at Tennessee Tech University and vice president of The National FFA Organization’s southern region, on what the future holds, both in Illinois and nationally, for young people choosing careers in agriculture, food, forestry and tourism.
