SIUnity and Diversity Open House is March 27

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Online registration is open now for the upcoming SIUnity and Diversity Open House, one of the most popular and best-attended open houses of the year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Admissions staff typically expects more than 1,000 students and their families to visit the campus during this open house and diversity celebration on Saturday, March 27.

The event features many of the standard SIUC open house schedule, but includes a diversity celebration from 1:45-2:30 p.m. This celebration highlights some of SIUC’s student groups and showcases the diversity and inclusiveness that is a part of the SIUC tradition.

Admissions requests pre-registration to help them plan, but registration is also available on-site. Check-in begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Student Recreation Center, with a welcome at 9:15 a.m.

Here are some highlights from the schedule:

Campus tours: Take a guided tour of our campus and residence halls. Tours start as early as 8:15 a.m., but continue through the event. At noon, colleges and departments offer tours of their particular facilities.

Information Fair and College/Departmental Showcases: This is the chance for students and their families to meet in one place with representatives from all over SIUC. Those who attend may talk with a financial aid counselor or admissions representative, meet faculty members from your major, learn about scholarship and study abroad opportunities, chat with current SIUC students, and compare notes with other students considering attending SIUC.

Short sessions: With different sessions for admitted students, prospective students and those who remain undecided, those present can get answers to questions that apply to their particular situations. Or, attend a short session on financial aid, admissions counseling and University Housing. Afternoon sessions include information about SIUC’s affiliation with national “Greek” fraternities and sororities, opportunities to join a Living Learning Community within the residence halls, and a federal financial aid form workshop.

Diversity celebration: SIUC students take the stage to demonstrate through performances some of the student organizations on campus.

The Inter-Greek Council invites the public to the 63rd annual Theta Xi Variety Show beginning at 6 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door. The varied program includes music, dance, fashion, performance art and more.
