Ten questions with ... Margaret Lay

Job on campus/department you work in: Business Manager II in the Office of Economic and Regional Development

How long at SIUC: 24 years

Hometown: I’ve lived in Benton for the past 9 ½ years…grew up in Du Quoin.

When you were a youngster, what did you want to be when you grew up? A professional figure skater (even had the “Dorothy Hamill” haircut.)

People don’t know that I: have a fear of grasshoppers. (I figure there must be some traumatic childhood memory of my older brother tormenting me with one that I must be blocking out.)

If you could choose another profession, what would it be and why? A forensic scientist. I’m a real “details” person so I think it would be fascinating to study a piece of fabric or something and be able to learn all sorts of information from just one tiny sample.

What is something you still want to accomplish in life? Learn to play an instrument.

What was the first “album” you ever bought, and was it an LP, 8-track or CD? Andy Gibb -- “Shadow Dancing” -- it was an LP (had a HUGE crush on him- ha!)

Cats or dogs? Actually more of a cat person, but currently have a dog, a beagle “mutt” named Maisy.

What is your favorite food and why? So tough to pick just one…..guess I’ll go with pasta because you can do so many different things with it and everything tastes better when it is covered in melted cheese.

What is your pet peeve? Rudeness…seems like common courtesy for your fellow man is something of the past.

Favorite cartoon character? Why? Lucy VanPelt. She was sarcastic, didn’t sugarcoat things to spare your feelings but was actually vulnerable and just wanted to be loved.
