by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Teachers, coaches and others who plan or supervise activities for elementary, middle and high school students can get tips on topics ranging from boomerangs to wall climbing at the Sixth Annual Southern Illinois Physical Education and Health Conference.

On-site registration for the daylong event begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Davies Hall on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus, with small group sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running through the afternoon.

Conference organizer Tony Calabrese, an instructor in the kinesiology department, which is sponsoring the event, said anyone interested in improving team performance also would benefit from attending.

“We will have team-building presentations conducted by some of the best team builders in the Midwest,” he said.

Sessions deal with, among other subjects, the use of automatic defibrillators, gym bowling, coping with a shoestring budget, environmental education, orienteering and juggling.

On-site registration for the public costs $95 (non-kinesiology majors pay $15) and includes a bag lunch. Those who pre-register pay $85. Mailed registration forms must be sent by Feb. 26.

After that, early registrations will be taken by telephone at 618/536-7751, by fax at 618/453-5680, or online through SIUC’s Division of Continuing Education.
