Media Advisory -- R.A.D. training

A nationally recognized program for women that teaches self-defense tactics as well as techniques that reduce the risk of an attack concludes this weekend at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Eighteen women and girls as young as 12 years old are participating in the R.A.D., or Rape Aggression Defense system training at the Student Recreation Center.

Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to attend the last session on Sunday, Jan. 31, which will include simulations where instructors don the “Red Man Outfit,” and participants demonstrate lessons learned in the course.

The session is from 1 to 4 p.m. in the recreation center’s alumni lounge.  The course consists of four, three-hour classes.  The training is free, and offered by the SIUC Department of Public Safety.

To arrange interviews or for more information, contact SIUC police officer Russell Thomas at 618/453-3771, ext. 274.
