Transue to serve as head opera coach at festival

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Paul Transue, assistant professor in the School of Music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will serve as head opera coach and head of musical preparation for the opera in the Avalon Summer Festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, this summer.

The festival runs from June 27 to July 18. It is a new, intensive performance program targeting singers and pianists. The festival includes two fully staged operas. This year’s selections are “The Rape of Lucretia,” and “Albert Herring,” both by Benjamin Britten.

Festival participants have available to them other performance opportunities, such as master classes and recitals.

Transue, working with other professionals and educators from such musical institutions as The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, will prepare students to participate in the operas -- the crowning achievement of festival participation.

At SIUC, Transue serves as opera and vocal coach and teaches collaborative piano. For a full biography or to learn more about the SIUC School of Music, go to http://music.siuc.edu/.
