Flags lowered to honor war casualty

Under a proclamation signed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, the United States flag and the Illinois flag are to fly at half-staff at all State of Illinois facilities in honor of a U.S. Air Force airman killed last week while serving in the war in Afghanistan.

Flags are to be flown at half-staff beginning Saturday, Jan. 9, until sunset, Monday, Jan. 11, in honor of U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Bradley Randall Smith.

Reports indicate that Smith, 24, of Troy, died Jan. 3 from injuries received in a roadside bomb attack near Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Smith was one of four U.S. service members killed in the attack.

Reports say Smith joined the Air Force in November 2006, and was deployed to Afghanistan in December. He was assigned to the 10th Air Support Operations Unit out of Fort Riley, Kan. He graduated from Triad High School in 2004.
