Yoplait lid collection helps breast cancer research

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Two Southern Illinois University Carbondale facilities are joining to raise funds to fight breast cancer.

They’re collecting pink Yoplait yogurt lids in conjunction with Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives campaign. You’ll find pink drop-off boxes at the Student Recreation Center and the Student Health Center through the end of November. Simply drop off your clean pink Yoplait lids at either location.

Boxes at the Student Recreation Center are located at the equipment desk, the administrative office and the Lifestyle Enhancement Center. There’s a collection box at the Student Health Center’s Wellness Center too.

All lids will go to Yoplait. For every lid submitted, parent company General Mills, Inc. will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The company guarantees a $500,000 contribution and SIUC is doing its part to secure the maximum $1.5 million donation to the foundation, created to help win the battle against breast cancer.

This is the fifth year the Student Recreation Center is promoting the yogurt lid collection in memory of Kathleen Ann Guilfoyle, longtime assistant director of Recreational Sports and Services who lost her battle with the disease in August 2003, and in memory and honor of women and families everywhere touched by the disease.

You can also mail your lids to the SIUC Student Recreation Center, attention fitness department, Mailcode 6717, Carbondale, IL 62901 for shipping to General Mills. For more information, contact Lynne Thompson-Cundiff at 618/453-1275 or via e-mail at tlc2@siu.edu.
