by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Civic Orchestra presents a concert on Nov. 5 at Shryock Auditorium on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus.

The Southern Illinois Civic Orchestra includes members of the Southern Illinois community as well as college students. Members are from Carbondale, Carterville, Chester, Du Quoin and Pinckneyville and range in age from adult all the way to 9 years old.

Eric Lenz, assistant professor of cello and director of SICO, said several of the selections for the concert are from larger dramatic works.

A piece featuring the string section highlights the infamous “Shower Murder Scene” and Prelude composed by Bernard Hermann for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 movie “Psycho.”

The program includes Manuel de Falla’s “El Sombrero de Tres Picos,” better known as the ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat. The story concerns a miller and his wife and the trouble they have when a magistrate takes a fancy to the wife.

Other selections include the Menuet from Haydn’s Symphony No. 100, also known as the “Military Symphony,” and the selection “Jupiter” from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students. Tickets are available in advance from the ticket offices in the SIU Arena or the Student Center, or beginning one hour before the performance at Shryock Auditorium.
