Surplus Gallery hosts installation art exhibit

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Installation art isn’t the kind you can bring home and hang on your wall or set on your shelf. Installation art must be appreciated where it is … installed.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Surplus Gallery, located in the old Glove Factory at 432 S. Washington Ave., is hosting an exhibition of installation artwork, “Title Withheld II,” through July 17.

Alex Lopez, assistant professor of foundations and sculpture at SIUC, curates the exhibit. Artists featured are Phillip Carrier, Hee-Hun Cho, Hyun Sung Cho, Erin Cooksey, John Paul Jones, Sara Lebowicz, Jing Li, Lacey Pipher and Claudia Torres-Ambriz.

Surplus Gallery hours are 1-3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 1-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The gallery maintains a heavy exhibit schedule throughout the academic year and summer, often as a showcase for student work.
