CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 2009 Young Writers Workshop is coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale June 23-27.

The workshop, open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, offers the chance to explore and develop their poetry and prose writing talents. SIUC faculty will lead students in daily critique sessions. The creative writing faculty and graduate students will also direct participants attending panels, readings and craft discussions.

The resident camper fee is $275 and includes all meals and materials along with four nights lodging in the air-conditioned and supervised Brush Towers. The $225 commuter camper fee includes lunch, dinner and materials. Commuter campers should arrive at 8:45 a.m. Pickup is at 9 p.m. daily at the Student Center.

Camp enrollment is limited to 30 participants with registration on a first come, first served basis. Participants must register in advance by June 5 and registration requires a $70 non-refundable deposit. The remaining balance is due upon arrival at the camp.

Camp participants should send with their deposit and registration a typed sample of their writing. The sample can be up to three poems or three to five pages of prose. Writing samples will determine which workshops participants will attend and may qualify students for partial camp scholarships.
