Media Advisory -- Senior Citizens Prom

A “senior prom” for senior citizens will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Hurricane Creek Assisted Living Center, 400 Lou Ann Drive in Herrin, thanks to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Social Work Student Alliance, an undergraduate student organization of some 60 majors. Invitations have gone out to seniors in other area centers.

Saturday’s “Big Band Bop” will feature dance music provided by the Johnson City disc jockey group “Music in Motion,” prom décor and corsages or boutonnieres for each of the seniors. It will end with coronations of the prom king and queen.

“We have interns at Hurricane Creek, and we thought this celebration would be a nice way to honor the people there,” said faculty adviser Joanne M. Chezem.

The prom caps a year of alliance service activities that included a bake sale to buy recreational equipment for the Boys and Girls Club, a birthday party for the children at The Women’s Center, participation in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life events, as well as highway trash collection.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome at the prom. Contact Chezem for more information at 618/534-6495.
