New Arts Jazztet plans two performances

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Music brings two days in a row of jazz to Southern Illinois University Carbondale as part of the Outside the Box Music Festival.

The New Arts Jazztet, a faculty jazz ensemble, takes the stage at Shryock Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2.

They do it again, same place, same time, on Friday, April 3, this time accompanied by the SIUC Studio Jazz Orchestra.

Both shows are $10 for general admission, $5 for students. Tickets are on sale the night of the performance, or in advance at the SIU Arena or Student Center ticket offices.

The New Arts Jazztet is Southern Illinois’ premier jazz ensemble. The group naturally holds a large repertoire of jazz standards, but it is known for its own “hard-bop” compositions as well. Besides Southern Illinois venues, the jazz group hits such sites as Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp and Pops for Champagne in Chicago.

The New Arts Jazztet is: Bob Allison, trumpet and flugelhorn; Phil Brown, bass; Ron Coulter, drums/percussion; Mel Goot, piano; Dick Kelley, saxophones; and Tim Pitchford, trombone.

Friday’s performance includes the Studio Jazz Orchestra featuring works by Maria Schneider, Lyle Mays, Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones and more.
