Learning in Retirement meeting set for March 18

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host its monthly meeting Wednesday, March 18, at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center located at 150 E. Pleasant Hill Road in Carbondale.

Monthly SILIR meetings are free and open to the public. A coffee social hour kicks things off at 9:30 a.m., followed by the meeting and program at 10:30 a.m.

Richard “Pete” Peterson, SIUC English professor emeritus and commentator for WSIU-FM’s “Reading Baseball” will present “You Have to be Taught: Reflections on Baseball, Race and the Working Class.” Peterson will discuss his years growing up on Pittsburgh’s working-class south side during the city’s post-World War II renaissance and the importance of sports in shaping his life and America’s working class character.

You can still get an annual 2009 membership for SILIR. The $25 yearly membership fee allows enrollment in SILIR-sponsored courses and participation in a variety of other special events and social activities.
