Retirement program to focus on Azerbaijan

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement program from Southern Illinois University Carbondale is hosting its monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18, featuring a presentation entitled “Azerbaijan.”

The meeting starts with coffee at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10:30 a.m. program at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, 150 E. Pleasant Hill Road, Carbondale. Leo A. Gher, professor emeritus from the SIUC College of Mass Communication and Media Arts and founder of Avery Media International, will be the guest speaker. His informational address will explore Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region, focusing on Azerbaijan’s current relationship with the United States, its historical conflict with Russia, its present war with Armenia, its oil boom and its place in the greater Islamic world.

Like all monthly meetings of the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement program, this meeting is free and open to the public. Annual 2009 memberships in the SILIR program are still available. The $25 yearly membership fee provides enrollment in SILIR-sponsored courses and participation in a variety of other special events and social activities.
