School of Art and Design to host Maud Lavin

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale welcomes Maud Lavin for a lecture and brown-bag lunch discussion on Monday, Feb. 9.

Lavin is the chair of the visual and critical studies program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she is also professor of visual critical studies and art history, theory and criticism. She is also the author of several books of art history and criticism.

The brown-bag lunch discussion is from noon to 1 p.m. in Allyn Hall, Room 112. The topic is “Publishing on Art, Design and Culture.” This is an informal discussion focused on getting published -- the opportunities, challenges and options.

The lecture, “Bring it On! New Images of Feminine Aggression in Art and Visual Culture,” is the same day at 7 p.m. in the University Museum auditorium. The lecture focuses on “the mainly positive representations of feminine aggression” in recent cultural expression in the United States. Lavin looks at some recent women-and-sports movies, such as the “Bring it On!” referred to in the lecture title. Her lecture includes a look at some art-and-activist groups and the overall effect on the art world.

Both events are free and open to the public.

The Fine Arts Activity Fee helps support the Visiting Artist Program of the School of Art and Design.
