Flags lowered to honor former state senator

Under a proclamation signed by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the United States flag and the Illinois flag will fly at half-staff at all State of Illinois facilities next week in honor of former state Sen. John J. Nimrod, R-Chicago.

Flags are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset, Monday, Jan. 19.

Nimrod, 86, of Glenview, died Sunday, Jan. 4, in Glenbrook Hospital, according to reports.

A one-time Republican precinct committeeman and Niles Township supervisor, Nimrod served in the Illinois Senate from 1973 to 1983, representing the north suburban 4th District.

A native of Chicago, Nimrod, of Assyrian heritage, also formerly chaired the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization General Assembly and served as its honorary president since 2006.
