Joyce Fetro named interim department chair

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Joyce V. Fetro, professor in the Department of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will take over as interim chair Jan. 1, serving until at least July 1. She will replace David A. Birch, who has taken a position with East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

Kenneth Teitelbaum, dean of the College of Education and Human Services, described Fetro in an e-mail announcing her appointment as a nationally respected scholar, excellent teacher and supportive colleague,.

“I am very pleased to have Joyce in a leadership role in the department” he wrote. “I am very much looking forward to working more closely with her.”

A two-degree graduate of SIUC and a faculty member since 1997, Fetro was recently named the American Association for Health Education’s 2009 scholar, a recognition of her publication and presentation record and her communication skills. Her research focuses on youth development and resilience and on youth health risk behaviors.

Fetro also received an award of excellence from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for developing health education and prevention programs related to HIV. In addition, she has been honored as SIUC’s outstanding teacher and as the American School Health Association’s outstanding educator. She teaches undergraduate foundation courses and graduate research methods courses.

Fetro belongs to a number of professional groups including the American School Health Association, the American Association for Health Education and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
