Civic orchestra, brass ensemble present concert

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Civic Orchestra presents a concert in collaboration with the SIUC Brass Ensemble beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Shryock Auditorium.

The concert program covers a wide selection of classical music, much of which should be familiar to many in the audience.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 8 and selections from Grieg’s Peer Gynt, including the ever-popular -- especially at Halloween -- “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” Eric Lenz conducts.

The SIUC Brass Ensemble, conducted by Andrew Tucker, will perform three works, including Bruckner’s Ave Maria.

The finale includes both the orchestra and the ensemble, with the ensemble in the balcony. The finale includes movements from Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel.

The concert is a U-card approved event. The Student Fine Arts Activity Fee helped pay for this performance. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students. Tickets in advance are available at the SIU Arena and Student Center ticket offices, over the phone at 866/646-8849 or online at www.ticketmaster.com/shryock. Tickets are available at the Shryock box office one hour prior to the event.
