Deadline nears for submissions to ‘Grassroots’

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Get your creative on -- the deadline for submissions to “Grassroots,” the undergraduate literary journal at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is Oct. 29.

“Grassroots” is open to SIUC undergraduates only. Students of all majors may submit poems, short fiction, essays, plays/screenplays, photography, drawings, paintings, photographs of 3-D artwork or, as editor-in-chief Kathleen Richards explained, “Anything we can represent on a page.”

Students may submit their work online at grassrootsmag@gmail.com or they may submit hard copy in the Department of English office in Faner Hall, Room 2380. All work should include a cover page with the student’s full name, address and email address, Richards said. The magazine will be available in the late spring of 2009.

“Grassroots” also sponsors the annual Devil’s Kitchen Fall Literary Festival. The festival features poetry and fiction readings, poetry and fiction panels, and book signing opportunities. The festival is Oct. 23-25. All readings are in the Student Center Auditorium. Check the “Grassroots” Web site at www.siuc.edu/~grassroots/ for a full schedule or go to the Public Events calendar on the Saluki Times Web site at http://news.siu.edu. The readings are free and open to the public.
