Visiting artist plans workshop, performance

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Department of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University Carbondale welcomes visiting artist Kimberly Dark to the Marion Kleinau Theater for a workshop and performance Oct. 16-17.

Dark, a performance artist, scholar and storyteller, specializes in gender issues, sexuality and politics. Her workshops often focus on the writing side of performance, from slam poetry to autobiography to the getting started basics. Her current performance is “Personal, Powerful, Political.”

Both the workshop and the performance are free and open to the public. Dark’s workshop begins at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Kleinau Theater on the second floor of the Communications Building. Her performance is at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, at the same place.

Dark teaches sociology at California State University San Marcos and the University of Hawaii in between her workshop, lecture and performance schedule.
