Students to help clean up Crab Orchard refuge

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Comprising nearly 7,000 acres, the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is one of Southern Illinois' environmental gems.

Students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be at the refuge Saturday, April 12, cleaning up and sprucing up from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those needing transportation can meet at the front entrance to the SIUC Student Center at 8:30 a.m. for a bus ride to the site.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the Saluki volunteers hard at work at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge Saturday morning. Media may come to the Crab Orchard Marina at Carterville any time that morning. For more information contact Jill Pierard, Student Development graduate assistant, at 618/453-5714.


Participating students should pre-register with Saluki Volunteer Corps at the Student Development office on the third floor of the Student Center or by calling 618/453-5714 no later than 4 p.m. Friday, April 11. Volunteers will enjoy a free lunch at noon courtesy of the refuge. Also, a limited number of T-shirts and free day passes are available for volunteers.
