SIUC to offer classes in Mandarin Chinese

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Division of Continuing Education will offer a pair of classes for those interested in learning conversational Chinese and more.

Introduction to Mandarin Chinese is a beginner level class including instruction in the language, culture and customs. It combines intensive pronunciation and intonation training with essential expressions.

Mandarin Chinese I is a class for those already possessing basic Chinese language pronunciation skills. Its goal is giving overall training in listening, speaking and reading the language. Class participants will learn of Chinese texts, culture and customs as well.

Both classes meet for 10 weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from Feb. 20 through April 30. They’ll be in Room 318 at the University’s Pulliam Hall. The introductory class meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each week, followed by the Mandarin Chinese I class from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Registration for each class is $109 per person and the cost includes printed materials, instruction, a dinner and more.
