Indoor rowing challenge set for Saturday

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Just how fast do your arms move? The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Rowing Club gives you a chance to find out at this weekend's Saluki 5K Indoor Rowing Challenge.

The challenge is to row 5,000 meters as fast as you can on the rowing machines located upstairs, next to the suspended walking track at the SIUC Student Recreation Center. The event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, and will wrap up by noon, long before the Saluki football team takes on the University of Delaware in NCAA semifinal play at 3 p.m.

The Saluki 5K Indoor Rowing Challenge is free and anyone can participate. Everyone gets 15 minutes to warm up on the rowing machine of his or her choice. Then, the five-kilometer target is set on the monitor and the test of strength and endurance begins.

No prior rowing experience is needed although all participants assume liability for their participation; neither the SIUC Rowing Club or University are responsible for any injury that may occur during the event. It's all in the name of fun and friendly competition.

For more information or to reserve a time slot, contact Mike Magnuson, adviser for the SIUC Rowing Club, at magnusmj@siu.edu. Participants can reserve time slots the day of the event too.
