Jazz ensemble to present free recital Wednesday

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music offers a free recital by its jazz combos ensemble beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall.

The jazz combos group emphasizes interactive jazz improvisation skills in different jazz styles. Associate Professor Philip Brown is in his 16th year of directing the jazz combos. He said this concert represents "the culmination of the group's work for the semester."

The program includes selections from Thelonious Monk, Frank Rosolino, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, Bernie Miller and Gerry Mulligan.

Student performers are: Marc Abrate from Carbondale, baritone saxophone; William Shotton from Carterville, piano; Nathan Fry from Pittsfield, bass; and Aaron Bouslog from Danville, drums.
