Southern Clayworks plans annual holiday sale

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Everyone has someone on their Christmas list who is a difficult fit – someone who already has everything or who has enigmatic interests that never seem to match gifts purchased. Fret not, holiday shoppers –Southern Clayworks has your back.

Southern Clayworks, an organization of students in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Art and Design, offers its annual holiday sale, with a preview sale beginning at 5 p.m. on Nov. 28 in the breezeway between Wham and Pulliam halls. The rest of the sale takes place from Nov. 29 through Dec. 1 during the annual Holiday Craft Sale at the SIUC Student Center.

Clayworks President Yoshi Fujii said most of the items are functional pottery and prices begin at a reasonable $10. Other larger, items, of course, are priced accordingly. Art students create all items offered in this sale – all original artwork means even that person who has everything doesn't have something exactly like the pottery at this sale. As for that enigma – really, who doesn't like original art that is both functional and beautiful?

Sale proceeds are used for materials and equipment as well as to bring in visiting artists. Fujii said approximately 20 students make up Southern Clayworks.
