Exhibit features Lawson's photos, paintings

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — For the first time, the public can view in one place a significant collection of photographs and paintings by Richard A. Lawson. "Here and There" is the upcoming exhibit at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, running Nov. 2-Dec. 20. The exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A reception Nov. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the center's atrium will showcase the work of the emeritus professor. Lawson spent 30 years teaching English at SIUC before retiring in 1995.

The focal points of Lawson's still photography and hand-painted images are nature, people and places. Color and black and white photographs along with infrared pictures and hand-painted works provide an encompassing overview of Lawson's works, he said. Viewers will see through Lawson's eyes local sights and locales as diverse as Hilton Head, S.C., New Orleans and the western United States.

The exhibit is one of the ongoing series of displays featuring the work of regional artists at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, located at 150 E. Pleasant Hill Road in Carbondale.
