Yogurt lid donations help fight breast cancer

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Student Recreation Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is helping raise funds to fight breast cancer as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

A collection effort now under way also honors the memory of Kathleen Ann Guilfoyle, longtime assistant director of recreational sports and services, and others whose lives breast cancer has touched.

People can drop off clean pink Yoplait yogurt lids at the Student Recreation Center through Dec. 14. The center staff will send the lids to Yoplait's "Save Lids to Save Lives" program. For each lid collected, Yoplait will donate 10 cents, up to a total of $1.5 million, to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The company has pledged a minimum $500,000 donation to the foundation created to help win the fight against breast cancer.

This is the third year the Student Recreation Center is sponsoring the yogurt lid collection said Sally Wright, who now serves in the position Guilfoyle held from 1982 until she lost her battle with the disease in August 2003. Wright said her predecessor was a "remarkable individual" with a strong and memorable commitment to the recreation center and the field of recreation. Helping fund research and the war against breast cancer, SIUC collected about 1,300 lids in 2006 and the goal this year is sending in 2,000 lids.

Drop boxes for the yogurt lids are located at the center's entrance turnstiles, information desk and Lifestyle Enhancement Center. Lids may also be mailed to SIUC Student Recreation Center, Mailcode 6717, Carbondale, IL 62901.
