High school seniors invited to reception, tailgate

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites every single high school senior in Southern Illinois to a reception and tailgate lunch beginning at 10 a.m. on Oct. 20.

The event ties in with Saluki Family Weekend. Katharine Suski, associate director of undergraduate admissions, said a weekend devoted to Saluki families seemed a good time to extend similar hospitality to prospective Salukis in the area.

"We are hosting this event for local high school seniors for the first time this year," she said. "Family Weekend is the perfect time, as it allows us to invite our local students, including the children of faculty and staff, to become part of the Saluki Family. We work hard to recruit local students and want to see many of them attend SIUC. I hope seniors and their families will come and experience campus through the reception, as well as the tailgate and football game."

The Southern Illinois High School Student Reception begins at the Hiram H. Lesar Law Building at 10 a.m. with a welcome to campus followed by several informal sessions of interest to local students, such as University Housing, campus ministries and scholarships.

The admissions office has a free Future Saluki tailgate lunch arranged for reception participants and their families following the program.

The SIUC Salukis face the Missouri State University Bears at 1:30 p.m. Each participating prospective student may request up to three tickets for the football game. The supply is limited – register early for a better chance at football tickets.

Students and their families can register online at admissions.siu.edu/sireception.htm by Friday, Oct. 5. Pre-registration is required.

The Lesar law building is at 1150 Douglas Drive on the SIUC campus. Take Illinois 13 to Oakland Avenue and go south (that will be a right turn if you are coming from the west and a left turn if you are coming from the east). Go south on Oakland Avenue to a four-way stop at Chautauqua Road. Cross Chautauqua Road and remain on Oakland Avenue for a short block until the road ends at Campus Lake and Douglas Drive. Turn right. The Lesar law building is on your right. You will be able to park in the lot that is directly in front of you.
